Classification of the Platypus In terms of classification, the furry platypus is indeed a mammal. It is not just any mammal, however. Another unlikely trait surfaces.

The platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus), sometimes referred to as the duck-billed platypus, is a semiaquatic egg-laying mammal endemic to eastern Australia, including Tasmania.
The Platypus is the sole survivor of the whole family of the Ornithorhynchidae. They are characterized by having the duck-bill, a flat tail for swimming and have hard plates in the mouth, instead of teeth.
